Cari amici,

ho visto il vostro Pulcinella. Beh, voi vi ricordate quanto mi era piaciuta la «Gazza ladra», quanto avessi ammirato la fantasia figurativa, l'estro umoristico, il senso della fiaba e le geniali soluzioni grafiche di quel vostro lavoro; non credevo avreste potuto fare di meglio. Con gioia, invece vi dico che ci siete riusciti. Pulcinella è più bello, ha qualcosa di più, e questo qualcosa di più è preziosissimo e appartiene alla poesia perché si riferisce ad sentimento che nell'altra vostra opera mi sembra fosse meno evidente, ed è il sentimento dell'umano, della sofferenza, del bisogno insopprimibile della giustizia.

Il vostro Pulcinella, pur rispettando la tradizione della maschera napoletana che lo vuole clown fantasioso e canagliesco, surreale e tutto sprofondato nei problemi di sopravvivenza animalesca racconta soprattutto il dramma grottesco e straziante di un uomo che vuole con tutte le sue forze essere libero.
Non è così?

Questo è il testo della lettera che Fellini inviò a Luzzati e Gianini quando apprese della seconda candidatura agli Oscar, dopo la Gazza Ladra, arriva nel 1974 Pulcinella.

Dear friends,

I have seen your Pulcinella. Well, you remember how much I liked "La Gazza ladra," how I admired the visual creativity, the humorous flair, the sense of the fairy tale, and the ingenious graphic solutions of that work; I didn't think you could do better. But with joy, I tell you that you have succeeded. Pulcinella is more beautiful, it has something more, and that something extra is very precious and belongs to poetry because it refers to a feeling that seemed less evident in your other work, and that is the feeling of humanity, of suffering, of the insuppressible need for justice.

Your Pulcinella, while respecting the tradition of the Neapolitan mask that portrays him as a whimsical and roguish clown, surreal and deeply immersed in the problems of animalistic survival, mainly tells the grotesque and heartbreaking drama of a man who wants with all his might to be free.
Isn't it so?
